Welcome to Lima! After your arrival at the Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima, head straight to your hotel.
You will be transferred to Lima Airport for your flight bound to Puerto Maldonado. You will be met at Puerto Maldonado Airport and then transferred to your lodge offices. A 40-minute boat trip on the Madre de Dios river will take you to the Corto Maltes Lodge where you will be received and given a welcome cocktail. Check into your bungalow and have lunch. After lunch, you will have free time to settle into your bungalow or enjoy the pool. Your first encounter with the forest is a hike during which you will learn about a large variety of medicinal plants, tropical trees, birds, insects, butterflies and other animals. Before dinner, you will go on a night boat trip in search of white caimans (caiman crocodilus) that live in the riverbanks.
Very early in the morning, set off to spot dozens of parrots and macaws that gather at the Colpa de Loros to eat the special clay that can be found here that is indispensable for their metabolism. Have breakfast and set off for the monkey island, where several species roam free. Then continue your trip on to Lake Sandoval and after half an hour by boat, you will enter the Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve territory. Continue on foot for around 5 kilometers to get to Lake Sandoval, where you will be able to spot giant otters, kingfishers and maybe even caimans and piranhas.
After breakfast, return to Puerto Maldonado. If you have time, you will visit the town fruit market before transferring to the airport. You will be picked up at Cusco Airport and transferred to your hotel.
Spend the day at your leisure in Cusco. In the morning, you can go to the San Pedro market to discover the many varieties of exotic fruits you will only find in Peru, cusqueño bread, local cheeses, as well as Cusquenian florists and craftsmen of all kinds! You can then go to the Plaza de Armas to visit the cathedral of Cusco, surely the most beautiful religious monument in the country. Finally, visit the Qoricancha Temple. This Inca temple (the most precious of the time) was ravaged by the Spaniards during the colonization. Its foundations were later reused to build the church of Santo Domingo. At the end of the day, you can go to the Sacsayhuaman Archeological Site, which you will reach through the traditional district of San Blas.
Depart in a private vehicle on a day-trip exploring the Sacred Valley. The first stop will be at the ruins of Pisac, one of the main Inca sites, where the different areas (administrative, religious, military) are scattered on the mountainside. Also observable are the large terraces that were used for agriculture, but also protected from the effects of erosion. Then, take a walk around the colorful handicraft market before hitting the road again, this time in direction of the salt flats of Maras that, since Inca times, have collected salt water from a local source. This is then transformed into salt through the evaporative effect of the sun. Walk down to the Urumbamba River, where a vehicle awaits to take us on to Ollantaytambo, the last inhabited village of Inca architecture . Visit the monumental stone fortress.
Transfer to Ollantaytambo’s train station in a private vehicle. Later in the morning, take a first-class train to Aguas Calientes. You will enjoy the beautiful landscapes while having a lunch. Arrive at Machu Picchu, one of the most stunning wonders of the world. Machu Picchu is 15th-century ancient Inca city in Peru. Abandoned during the collapse of the Inca Empire, it is considered as a masterpiece of Inca architecture. Together with your English-speaking guide, you will start to discover the archaeological complex still covered by the morning mist, built on top of a ridge and surrounded by precipices. Explore on your own afterwards. At the end of the day, you will head back to Poroy by train!
Transfer to Cusco bus terminal. Depart on a tourist bus to Puno, a town located on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Enjoy the wonderful landscapes along the road! Visit the Pukara Museum, the archaeological site of Raqchi and the “Sistine Chapel” of the Andes in Andahuaylillas. An English-speaking guide, exclusive to the bus company, participates in the journey and gives information along the way. Later, transfer to the hotel.
In the morning, transfer to the port of Puno and embark for the islands of Uros and Taquile with a group and an English-Spanish bilingual guide. After a 25-minute cruise, visit the floating islands. These islands are not natural; the Uros tribe, whose main activity is fishing, built them. Head for Taquile, an island of great cultural interest, where residents live in harmony with the ancestral traditions. Have lunch in a local traditional restaurant. Return to Puno in the afternoon.
Today, check out and head to Juliaca Airport.
