San Jose International Airport
3 Hours Before Flight Time
Welcome to Costa Rica! You will be greeted by a member of our team at the Juan Santamaria International Airport near San José, located at 1150 meters above sea level in the heart of the Central Valley. Your private driver will give you your travel documents and take you to your hotel.
Spend your day hiking the fantastic Arenal volcano. A 3-kilometer path will lead you through the primary forest. Enjoy stunning views of the tropical vegetation and of the volcano, while crossing over 8 fixed bridges and 6 hanging bridges over and through the canopy. Remember to bring your walking shoes in order to enter the park and get the most of your experience. Many other activities are available in the area, including canopy exploration (suspended bridges, cableway), wildlife viewing, boat rides across the Arenal Lake, kayaking, fishing, trekking, and horseback riding.
In the morning, get back on the road and head in the direction of Playa Esterillos, one of the most beautiful grey sandy beaches that you can find between Jacó and Quepos. Continue on to Cañas, where it is possible to make a pitstop at Las Pumas de Cañas animal park, a private center for feline protection and home to jaguars, pumas, jaguarundis, margays, and ocelots. On your way, take the opportunity to observe crocodiles on the Rio Tarcoles or visit the Carara National Park.
After breakfast, take a walk in the Manuel Antonio National Park, which combines beautiful beaches with coral reefs and a wonderful variety of wildlife. Here, go swimming in the crystal waters, relax on the sandy beaches, and stroll through the tropical vegetation with your beloved. The site is ideal for the observation of many unique animals, such as sloths and squirrel monkeys. You will also be able to visit the small National Carara Park, which is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country. The bird population is impressive, especially the scarlet macaws which can be observed migrating twice a day between the forest and the coastal mangroves. Finally, around Dominical, you can enjoy the National Wildlife Refuge of Barú – a tropical rainforest located along a beautiful beach at the mouth of the Rio Barú.
This morning, head south to the wild Osa Peninsula. During the drive, you can enjoy some gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. Afterward, arrive at Sierpe, where you will drop off your vehicle. Be greeted by a member of our staff at Sierpe and then transfer by boat to Bahia Drake. Along the way navigate through the heart of the mangroves.
Wake up early in the morning and get ready for a full day of exploration of the Corcovado National Park, which is considered as the treasure of the wet tropical reserves. Travel by boat and by foot through the biggest wet tropical forest of the American Pacific coastline. Enjoy waterfalls and crystal water pools on the walking paths of San Pedrillo. Enjoy the opportunity to observe a great variety of birds, including the harpy and the scarlet macaw. This is also the best place to see jaguars and tapirs on the beach at dusk.
Today, explore the Biological Reserve of the Isla de Caño, a place formerly sacred for pre-Columbian Diquis natives. The coral-colored beaches are perfect for relaxing or snorkeling. Dolphins, whales, and manta rays are present in the warm water off the coast. You can also spend your time enjoying the walking paths through the spectacular natural surroundings.
Enjoy some free time before heading to Drake. Continue on the road to San Gerardo de Dota (located at 2200 meters altitude) along the Panamerican highway to the towns of Palmar Norte and San Isidro de El General. Travel through the magnificent country of the precious Quetzal, and look for glimpses of these beautiful birds between the trees. Later, arrive at your hotel at the bottom of the steep valley of the Río Savegre.
Go on a morning walk on the paths around the lodge and watch the birds. You will discover opulent vegetation and numerous winged creatures, including the emblematical and mystical Quetzal along with hummingbirds and woodpeckers. In the morning, head back to San José, driving through the Cerro de la Muerte. On your way, stop in Cartago, the first town and historical capital city of Costa Rica. It was founded in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador, who gave his name to the city. Arrive at the airport in San José in time for your onward flight. Safe travels, and visit again soon!
